For farm fencing on NC clay soil we set line posts 2’–2.5′ deep and corner and gate posts 3’–4′ deep in concrete. Shallower posts are the most common cause of farm fence failure — posts heave in frost or tip under livestock pressure when they’re not deep enough. We never cut corners on post depth on agricultural builds.
No-climb horse fence (woven wire with small square openings, typically 2″×4″ mesh) paired with a top board rail is the safest and most widely used horse fence in North Carolina. The small mesh prevents horses from getting legs or hooves caught, and the top board improves visibility so horses see the fence line clearly. Board and rail alone (without wire) is also popular for paddocks and smaller enclosures.
Standard post spacing for board fence is 8’–10′ on center. Wire fence posts typically run 10’–12′ on center for line posts, with braced corner assemblies at every change of direction. Post spacing is adjusted for terrain — closer spacing on slopes and in low areas where water collects and soil softens.
Agricultural fencing in unincorporated Wake County and most rural Johnston, Chatham, and Orange County parcels does not require a permit. Fencing within city limits or on parcels with HOA restrictions may have different rules. We confirm the specific requirements for your parcel before any work begins — at no extra charge.
Pressure-treated board and rail fence typically lasts 20–30 years in North Carolina with basic maintenance. Posts treated to UC4B ground-contact standard hold up best in NC’s clay soil and humidity. Wire fence fabric lasts 15–25 years depending on gauge and coating. The biggest factor in lifespan is post quality and installation depth — both of which we get right the first time.
